Leon Morrocco - Havana

12 October - 4 November 2006

Few countries love their artists more than Cuba. The warmth with which Leon Morrocco was welcomed on his first visit there in April showed how far that affection can extend. Through a chance introduction to one of Cuba's best known painters, José Antonio Hechavarria , Leon Morrocco encountered a side of Havana that few tourists see. Not only the vibrant community of painters, sculptors, film-makers, dancers and musicians but also the private face of Havana: the street culture taking place in the doorways, alleys and pavements with which perhaps only Naples can compare.

The resulting paintings are a fascinating document of old Havana through Leon Morrocco's eyes. He is naturally drawn to the faded glory of the colonial architecture; the layers of rich colours jumbled on the crumbling facades and of course the great characters lingering in shadowy doorways or gossiping across two balconies.
